Proximus uses 2100 MHz for 5G
Wednesday 1 April 2020 | 10:20 CET | News
Proximus uses the 2100 MHz band for the 5G services announced on April 1. Proximus has a carrier of 2 x 15 MHz and can make room there through refarming. The 5G subscription can be ordered immediately for EUR 49.99 per month. The first suitable smartphone is a model from Oppo.
Proximus has already launched 5G, although the main frequencies are yet to come. The Belgian government has not yet been able to take a decision on the auction of 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz. In addition, the current permits will also expire in 2021. BIPT wants to renew the existing mobile licenses for six months each time and to issue licenses in 3.6 GHz-3.8 GHz through a temporary arrangement. However, Proximus did not wait for that.
Refarming makes it possible to free up a carrier and use it for 5G New Radio. That starts with an NSA (non-stand alone) rollout, so 5G is subordinate to the LTE-Advanced network. 5G in the 2100 MHz band comes at the expense of 3G. Modern mobile networks can also deploy the various technologies dynamically and change according to demand. That could mean that 3G coverage remains if there is no demand for 5G.
The launch of 5G is only possible in the regions of Flanders and Wallonia, Datanews reports. The Brussels region has not given permission for refarming, so 5G is not available there. In any case, Proximus will start on a small scale with the rollout. The coverage map mentions more than thirty municipalities on the day of the launch.
Theoretical speed up to 30% higher
Proximus uses the existing mobile network with RAN equipment from the supplier Huawei. With this 5G service, the maximum download speed can be increased by 30 percent, Proximus reports, without mentioning the speed in detail.
Proximus offers 4G on the 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz licenses and has already activated 4G + carrier aggregation (CA). A 5G carrier can now be added locally, in a profile with 4-carrier aggregation. However, whether an end user actually receives CA depends on the available capacity, which must be divided among all users. The average speed always remains (far) below the theoretical maximum speed.
5G subscription really unlimited
The 5G plan offers unlimited data, which is also unlimited in this case. The new bundle 5G Unlimited costs EUR 49.99 per month and offers unlimited mobile data at the highest available speed on 4G, 4G + and 5G.
The existing mobile bundle XL Unlimited costs EUR 42.99 per month. It offers 30 GB per month at the highest 4G speed. After reaching 30 GB, the download speed is reduced to 512 kbps. Proximus currently offers one 5G handset. This is the Oppo Find X2 5G, with a retail price of EUR 1,199.
